NORMAN MOONEY | blooms

Inspired by the work of the 19th century biologist Ernst Haeckel and his study of microbes, Norman Mooney's Bloom series is an exploration into, and a study of, the geometry of structures. The work celebrates the remarkable diversity of form, pattern, shape, and materiality found in nature and the synergy that connects it. This series also examines our own sense of space, our physical awareness, and how we interact with the environment around us.

NORMAN MOONEY | BIOGRAPHY

Norman Mooney was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1971. He studied at the Crawford College of Art and Design in Cork and completed his BFA at the National College of Art in Dublin in 1992. He then received the distinguished honor of participating in the Third Degree program at the Irish Museum of Modern Art from 1992 to 1993. In 1994 he relocated to New York City and has been exhibiting locally and internationally for more than 20 years. In 2000 he established WorkSpace11 in New York City where he works with a team of architects and engineers.

Recent exhibitions include In Sight at Marso Gallery in Mexico City, What Happens today will last Forever at Causey Contemporary in New York and Meeting in Brooklyn presented at Landcommanderij Alden Biesen, Alden Biesen in Belgium.

Norman makes works that are at once physical and metaphysical. His works explore the elemental and cyclical synergies of nature. By studying the structures, patterns and synchronicities found in both the micro and macro universes, Norman hopes to understand something of our place in this world. The biodynamic systems found in nature and explored through the mediums of maths and science are the building blocks of Norman’s work. His process is intuitive rather than emphatic, following a visual theory of quantum connectivity.

Materiality, patterns, rhythms, scale and color are all key concerns within Norman’s practice. His work explores how the synergy of these elements orientates our experience, defines our physical sense of space and sets our internal equilibrium.
